Habitat for Humanity Pieced Afghan Project
For this project, we're making three blankets which will be given to the recipients of Habitat for Humanity houses at a dedication ceremony on June 30, 2007. These are pieced blankets, much in the tradition of a pieced quilt but using knitted squares instead of fabric.
We’re using Cascade 220 Superwash Yarn in these seven yummy earthy colors:
#863
#873
#855
#888
#823
#823
#862
Using #8 needles and a cast-on of anywhere between 35-38 stitches, knit a square any way you'd like: a solid garter square, a multi-colored square, a patterned square...Whatever suits your fancy and level of experience.
And I'm using the word "square" very loosely here. We're not making any attempt to create an afghan of uniformly-sized pieces, so no worries! The beauty of this kind of project is in the variations.
Don't fret about mistakes either. There's a quilting tradition that bears repeating: quilters often consciously put a flaw into their work - a reminder that perfection belongs to no one but God. :-)
Please finish your work by weaving in the loose ends, giving your squares a gentle warm water wash, and then blocking and air drying them so they're ready to be pieced.
I'll need all squares no later than Friday, May 18th.
Thanks so much! Have fun.

P.S. Is anyone willing to organize a U-Knitarian presence at the dedication and work with the HH people on this? I'll be out of town on that date. (We'll also need a photographer to document the proceedings for our scrapbook!)

Oh! This sounds wonderful! Will do my best to get some squares to you by the deadline.
I really love these kinds of projects. The results can be really beautiful, and such a good cause.
When it's done, I'd love to take some photos of the afghans for the blog.
Oh, I'd LOVE it if you'd be our afghan photographer! Can you come to one or both of our "piecing bees" in June?
I'm trying to get a couple of decent shots of some of our felted bowls for the blog, too. They're really magnificent when arranged en mass. I've got a little "still life with bowls and bird's nest" in our living room, just waiting for the right light. (Where did the sun go?)
Thanks too for offering to make more squares for our afghans. Can't wait to see your "free-range" style. You are one talented gal!

I'll do my best to be there, Stevie, both to help out with the piecing and to photograph the group working. A worthy project, as I said, and one that will be great fun.
